Lonely Regency romance writer travels to the future, meets her fans, dips into a pearly swimming pool, and falls for its owner. Can she ever go home again…

If Jane Austen’s novels had never ever existed, would we have rom-com movies and women’s fiction? But the young writer is discouraged by a publisher’s rejection and ready to give up writing. And an unwelcome marriage proposal she has rashly accepted spells her doom.

Someone must save history and Jane Austen! When a stranger calls and claims to be an interested publisher, a desperate Jane agrees to go with him to his office. That office turns out to be in the future. And it's not an office, but a bookstore in southern California in 2024 where fans of Jane Austen gather every month to discuss her works.

Jane greets the Jane Austen Superfan Club, only to find that superfans can be super picky. Discouraged by their critiques, Jane wants different adventures. Even deadly, dangerous ones. And oh, yes! Romantic ones.

Her “publisher” had hoped to inspire Jane’s writing by showing her a book club devoted to her writing. But when she meets a tall, handsome superfan, Jane decides to chart her own course. She disappears with her new friend, and history may have to save itself …

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Jane saw her future pulled down like an old curtain, crumpled up for the dust bin. The manuscript hadn’t been ready for such a test. If only her father hadn’t taken the decision out of her hands.

She stepped backward. Her leg felt the chair just as her knees folded her down. She sat abruptly, sucked in a sob, and held her breath. Jane was an obedient girl, one who did not let fly her wild emotions—especially not in front of her parent.

“Jane, breathe!” her father said. “It is not the end of the world.”

“But it is the end of all my hopes. Why did you send it without asking me? I know my writing was not ready!“ She looked around the dim room, full of books and dust. It seemed to freeze in time, a picture of the end of her life.

He came toward her, a hand extended. He dropped it, helpless to comfort her. “My darling Jane, your writing is wonderful! We love hearing you read your stories. You write your characters with such wit! And your humorous speeches and heart-rending action charm us.“

She couldn’t bear his confusion. His raised eyebrows and down-turned mouth told her of his distress. “I know you meant well, Father, but you have robbed me of my best chance.”

Jane stared at her lap, her knees pressed together under the folds of muslin. Her small hands wrenched each other. “The name Jane Austen will never be on any volume. I shall quit writing.“

Stepping close, he took her hand, a rare touch. “My dear daughter, I have made a mistake. You must not stop writing. Your family and friends adore your imaginings! But you must also think of your future. Marriage, of course.“

She shot to her feet, trembling as words escaped her. “Father, I’m not ready to marry!”

    1. Hi! Thanks for asking. The oddest things inspire me to write. Mostly people and artists in history. Also places, such as northern Italy and southern California, where i grew up.

    1. I hope it is! I became fascinated with the idea of Jane Austen as a truly modern woman after reading several biographies. She would have enjoyed our century .. and that's how I got the ideas.

    1. Goodness! That's one of the hardest questions to answer. I'd have to say Shakespeare, all in all. Of contemporary authors, I'm currently obsessed with reading Beatriz Williams' books. And I'll throw in poet Mary Oliver too!

    1. The best advice I ever received was to think long-term about my writing career. Not to be in a hurry, but just write what I want to, and to learn by reading the best books in my categories.

    1. As I mentioned above, it's to think about my writing long-term, not this immediate book and how well it is or isn't doing. And to read to understand what I like in fiction, what's doing well in my category, and what I can learn from writing I like.

  37. What is your best advice for beginning writers?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Read lots of books like the ones you hope to write! There's so much to learn from authors you admire and from getting an idea of how people are writing in your chosen genre. I read women's fiction and time travel, plus I love reading memoirs. And even if I don't like a book, I try to learn something from my reaction to it -- why I didn't, how I'd improve the book, etc. Hope that helps!
