“My name is Ineluki. I come from past the mountains and ice. It took me many days to reach here. All I know are dead. Will you take me in?”

And so begins a calamitous year at the edge of the world.

Chief for the year, Aukul's life has never been better. His people respect him, he spends his nights with the love of his life, and his skills as a butcher and chef improve every day. Then Ineluki, a young stranger, wanders into town with nothing but an empty book. He begins telling stories of the world beyond the one they know. His stories challenge their reality and lead to a summer of unprecedented disasters.

One by one, the villagers begin dancing. Dancing tirelessly, as if in a trance, until they die. Believing Ineluki is to blame, Aukul confronts him on the worst night of his life.

EXCERPT:
I

Umok was the first to see the boy. There was nothing special about the boy except that he wasn’t one of us and didn’t seem to be an Uummanuq. Not that anyone really knew, then, what the Uummanuq looked like. Not really. But he was too tall to be one of them and much too short to be one of us. Maybe strangest of all, he was dressed as a woman. One of ours, not the Uummanuq women, assuming anyone knew, then, what the Uummanuq looked like when they weren’t smashing our homes down. But he wore a loose, open vest, his trousers tight and reaching just past his knees. In his hands, a hidebound book.

It was a clear day, just past spring, and though the edge of the world is known for its deathly cold, our summers are quite warm. Warm enough to wade out into the sea and gather crabs or lobster. Or even to swim out to where the leviathans burst through the water, spraying the skies with their misted breath.

Umok was so distracted by the boy that she dropped her arm, accidentally flinging her gyrfalcon, Feo, to the ground. When Feo shrieked the way she does, the boy turned to Umok and smiled a big toothy grin. To hear Umok tell it later, the boy had fangs like a wolf and eyes that glowed with menace.

We’re not prone to superstition, but much changed that summer and especially come winter, when the days last barely a blink and the nameless ones call out to us in the long night, and mothers wake to missing children, never to be seen again.

But the boy didn’t stop when he saw Umok. It was like he had a set destination. Like he knew where we were. And maybe that’s the most shocking of all. That he just wandered out from the dark green summer mountains and walked right to our little village at the edge of the world with nothing but the clothes he was wearing, an empty book, and a mouthful of words that would change the shape of all our lives.

GUEST POST:
- In what ways are you and your main character alike? Different?

The similarities between Aukul and me are few and far between. I’ve never been one for autobiography or even confessional writing, so I’ve never had the inclination or interest to write books about me or even an idealized version of myself.

I spend all day every day being me! I use my imagination to wander away from myself. Granted, few make a habit of getting far away from themselves, but I have always found it the most fun way to write.

However, there are some similarities. Aukul is only seventeen years old during the novel. Like many young men—myself included, when I was a young man—Aukul dreams of a life grander than the one he sees before him. He dreams of change. He longs to leave his own mark on the world. To be remembered. To be loved. To be appreciated. He is a man, like many men.

The ways we differ are many, but the one that comes easiest to mind is that I was a much more scattered person than Aukul. I had no singular vision of what I wanted out of life. I had no occupation or even dreamt of occupation that felt as if it would satisfy me. I had no vision of my own future. I longed for unnamable things, unnamable versions of a life I hoped to stumble into.

Now as a much older man than I was when I was Aukul’s age, I still find his singular focus interesting, for it has always escaped me. I am a person of diverse interests and constant distraction. I tinker in dozens of different hobbies and interests at all times, wandering this way and then that, but rarely do I remain devoted to a single topic.

That being said, I do love cooking. Aukul, for all his other hopes and dreams of change, is devoted to cooking and the preparation of food. His art is one of scent and taste. A transient yet beautiful art meant to be shared. Instantly recognizable and experienced. Whereas I tinker with words and stories that take hour upon hour to create and then at least a few hours to experience.

Our similarities are few but I do have great affection for Aukul. I gave him some of the tools he would need to achieve his dreams, yet kept back some that would have made all the difference.

So it goes.

Since the dawn of time, electromagnetic energy has permeated through the universe, surrounding and interacting with everything it touches, illuminating, destroying and giving life.

The colourful section of the electromagnetic spectrum we see in the form of visible light, rainbows and other phenomena is tiny when compared to its vast entirety. Using many parts of the electromagnetic spectrum have become common everyday occurrence for the majority of people on Earth, as it's been integrated into our lives in ways that we don't even think twice about it.

This book illuminates many parts of the electromagnetic spectrum and its effects, the endless ways we have harnessed its energy, and how we interact and live with its influence.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Why Things Appear Coloured

When white light hits a surface, some of the wavelengths of light are absorbed and some are reflected. The colour wavelength that gets reflected does so because the surface is the colour of that wavelength. For example, a red apple will absorb all the colours of white except for red, which it reflects. A green apple will absorb all the colours of white except for green, which it reflects. Objects will appear black under white light because they absorb all the colours of light.

This is a main reason why manufacturing good quality light sources is so important. Lighting manufacturers put the colours into the artificial light source and if one of the colours is slightly wrong, an object of that particular colour will not get its true colour reflected and will appear a different shade of the colour.

This reflection and absorption reaction of electromagnetic energy is the reason why darker coloured objects can appear hotter, as they are absorbing more electromagnetic energy rather than reflecting it away.

EXCERPT:
“You’re driving me crazy, Michelle. What game are we playing now? How to seduce Royce?”

How had he known? A wild guess? It didn’t matter.

His eyes had darkened to a gorgeous mossy color. “Seduce away, angel. You know how to turn me on.”

Royce swallowed, and the movement of his Adam’s apple increased the need in me. I’d always considered a man’s shoulders to be the feature I couldn’t resist, but right now, his Adam’s apple became the switch that lit me up.

I pressed my lips to the masculine bump on his throat and kissed it.

He crooned. “I’ll accept this defeat.”

“Willingly? You had no choice. You lost.” My voice vibrated against his throat.

He veered back, creating a slight distance between my lips. “I love that you wanted to win so badly.”

I needed to win because I wanted to know what he feared. That desire trumped everything else. “I like to win.”

High-stakes, globe-trotting romance from USA Today Bestselling Author Susan May Warren.

Meet the boys of Sky King Ranch! The Kingston brothers, Dodge, Ranger, and Colt are back in town, and you can read their stories in the Sunrise, Sunburst, and Sunset.

SUNRISE (Book 1)

Coming home was never the plan.

After a terrible family fight, pilot Dodge Kingston left home to join the Air Force. A decade later, he's headed back to the destiny that awaits him as heir to Sky King Ranch. But that's not all that's waiting for him at home.

Echo Yazzie is a true Alaskan woman--a homesteader, dogsledder, and research guide for the DNR. After her childhood best friend and former flame, Dodge, fled Denali, she settled into life on the Alaskan range. She's made her peace with being left behind--by her mother and by Dodge. And she's strong enough to live without them.

When one of Echo's fellow researchers goes missing, Echo sets out to find her, despite a blizzard, a rogue grizzly haunting the woods, and the biting cold. What she doesn't know is that there are more than just the regular dangers of the Alaskan forests stalking her . . .

As Dodge sets out to find Echo, he can't ignore the feelings he still has for her. But will he be able to find her in time? And if he does, is there still room for him in her heart?

SUNBURST (Book 2)

When former Navy SEAL and lifelong bachelor Ranger Kingston is called upon to take part in a rescue mission to save his brother Colt from terrorists in Nigeria, he is shocked to find among the hostages a woman he could never forget.

Noemi Sutton was attempting to return a young girl to her family in Boko Haram territory when she and the girl found themselves taken hostage, along with several others. And while Ranger Kingston may be able to get the hostages away from their captors, he'll need Noemi's help if he ever hopes to get out of Nigeria alive.

Her solution? Pose as husband and wife. But when her uncle discovers the union, he insists on a traditional Nigerian wedding--which would bind Noemi to a man destined to break her heart. Worse, the trouble they're fleeing has found them--again. It's clear anyone around Noemi is bound to be caught in the cross fire. Including her potential new husband.

She'll need to figure out a way to leave the man she loves if she wants to save his life.

SUNDOWN (Book 3)

He doesn't trust her . . . but he can't let her go it alone.

Former Delta Operative Colt Kingston knows when someone is lying. He may not know the truth, but he sure doesn't trust Tae, the mysterious woman his family rescued from an Alaskan blizzard. Behind those beautiful blue eyes, Colt can tell there is a troubled--and smart--woman.

A few of her stories prove true--they found the crashed plane and the dead body inside. Still, her tale of survival seems too incredible to believe . . . until the thugs she claims to be hunting her across Alaska show up and threaten Sky King Ranch. Now Tae must disappear, along with her secrets.

Colt will have to track her down and earn her trust before it's too late. It'll take the entire family to save the world from disaster.

The epic conclusion to Susan May Warren's Sky King Ranch trilogy.

Title: The Warlock's Curse
Author: C.B. Oresky
Publication Date: October 26th 2022
Print Length: 371 pages
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
~
Clara and Angelica Grace have never met ghosts. They’ve never sailed on a tall ship, ridden wild unicorns, or fought with magical weapons. Instead, the teenage twins have a wretched existence, ignored by their troubled parents in a rundown home and tormented by the town’s snobs.

Everything turns topsy-turvy all of a sudden when discovery of an ancestor’s hidden journal with an odd key to an unknown door leads them into an entirely different realm.

The girls go on a thrilling oceanic voyage to search for mysterious whales, train with a seasoned warrior, and are befriended by a wise Master. But all is not a bouquet of lovely lilies…they are hunted by a cunning warlock and must rid themselves of The Warlock’s Curse.

---
EXCERPT:
The whales’ frenzied song grew even louder—the electrical atmosphere intensified.

“Now what’s happening? We’re dissolving!” Clara yelled, watching her little hands disappear and then reappear again.

Angelica observed different parts of the ship, their cats, their bodies, and the monkey crew all vanishing momentarily. She drew a sharp breath. She was about to say something when the ethereal whale swimming directly before them opened its massive mouth, saltwater pouring down its yawning maw that seemed miles and miles deep.

“This is madness!” Clara shrieked, staring down the vast gaping throat of the beast. “Even a hurricane would be much better than this.

We’re going to die, for sure!” Angelica lost her composure. “Turn the ship!” she demanded. “I don’t wanna die!”

“Impossible!” Claudius cried. “We must go!” “I’m gonna be sick!” Clara cried, her face pasty. She clasped her sister’s scrawny hand in horror. What lay before them was far worse than that scary roller coaster Angelica had once convinced her to try at their town fair.

Catapulted forward by the hurrying tide, Claudius’s ship now sailed upon the phantasm of a massive whale. The sleek vessel hung momentarily on the edge of the watery precipice of white light, then slipped straight down the monster’s wide-open chasm…
---
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Fascinated by the works of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, C.B. Oresky began writing her own fantasy novel, The Warlock’s Curse, after dreaming of being whisked off to an alien realm. Besides her debut novel, she has seen four of her short stories published in a small, national literary press: Conceit Magazine. When she’s not writing, she can be found wandering through the woods, dancing flamenco, or planting flowers in her garden. She currently lives in a small town in Connecticut with her bodybuilder husband, their exceptionally naughty Scottish terrier and Siamese cat, ten chickens, Mr. Tiggy the hedgehog, and a yard filled with majestic flowers.

---
GUEST POST:
It all began as a dream…along with a dear friend, I sailed a white ship on a pristine sea of whispering turquoise waves. The inhabitants of this alien watery world, mystical whales, surrounded my vessel, their eerie voices lifted in song. I made a story out of this…and other magical dreams.

I have a fascination for twins. Thus, my main characters are identical twin sisters. Though they look alike, their personalities differ. I thought this would create both heartwarming moments and major fall outs.

I was inspired by the beauty of the small towns dotting New England, and, also, their quirky, eccentric inhabitants. Tree-lined lanes and majestic houses, creepy or well-kept, instigated the creation of the town of Coldport and the derelict estate of Seacrest.

I was moved by the big battles in Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, where the good heroes fight ultimate evil. Like Tolkien and Lewis, fun stuff, including magical weapons and powers, swords and armor, mystical creatures like dragons and unicorns, made my battle scene super exciting.

Life inspired my story. Every writer walks a unique path. Sometimes it is long, twisty, and dark. Other times straight, narrow, and full of light. Strange, wicked creatures often hide in the shadows and leap out. Saints with halos materialize out of nowhere to lend their helping hands. Walking these complicated paths breathed life into my tale.

Secrets inspired my work. Like a coffin buried deep, my sweet lips will remain forever sealed…for secrets are secrets, and the hour grows late.

EXCERPT:
I’m supposed to write in my journal every day. Sure. Like that’s the best use of my time. They said it’d be a private place to think, but I’ve wondered about that. I can think in my head without writing my thoughts. Just in case, I always use my disconnected tablet for the real journal, encrypted with three protective codes and in a language I developed myself. I know this might be over the top, but I’ve felt better knowing no one can read my actual journal. So, people can read how excited I am about my apprenticeship, but privately I’m totally dissed. I really want to learn about people From Away, and instead I’m apprenticing with Granny, my great-grandmother, who’s spent most of her life close to home in her research laboratory, two miles down an ancient mine shaft. It used to be where they studied mysteries of the universe! How the heck did that work?

I’ve always loved Granny. I’ve felt as though we’ve had a special relationship, and I’ve missed spending time with her. I just never thought they’d give me a responsibility so far removed from what I really want to be doing.

Ezma told me I’ve many skills and a strong aptitude for analytical thinking. I know what that means. It means sitting in an underground lab every day for the rest of my life. I guess I wasn’t very good at hiding my feelings because Ezma felt she had to remind me what Granny does is very important. Then she asked me a curious question.

“Do you know what she does?”

Well, of course I do! I explained, “Granny is the researcher who found the serum. She said it was a fluke.”

That comment made Ezma laugh, hysterically almost. “Well, Fania, you’ll find there’s a lot you can learn from Alicia. I hope you’ll keep an open mind.”

When I boarded the transport to head home after two years at Immersion, my patch reminded me to change my timer back to the village’s schedule. The health patch is a misnomer; it’s actually an up-to-date example of bio-merged nanotechnology. This latest gen’s so far advanced compared to the primitive models my grandparents used when they were young—those things they wore on their wrists. Now the healer implants the technology at birth where it merges with our brainwaves. It has reciprocal transformational capabilities, but I’ve been told there are limitations so it can’t change the basic personality or natural abilities of anyone. The patch transmits and receives communications, monitors personal health data, and provides all my reading materials. Everyone in our territory has them, so far as I know.

Title: Little Writer
Series: Marmee's Girls #1
Author: Marina Hill
Publisher: Evergreen Books
Publication Date: November 1st 2022
Print Length: 236 pages
Genre: Young Adult Historical Fiction
~
A retelling of the classic coming-of-age story Little Women through the intimate lens of Jo March.

It's 1862 and fifteen-year-old Jo March would rather be fighting in the war, like her papa, than improving her knitting skills on the home front. But societal conventions for the "gentle" woman-and her steadfast adoration for her three sisters-force Jo to stay behind and support the family, all the while rolling her eyes at Aunt March and daydreaming of becoming a famous author.

At home, love abounds in the March girls' lives in the form of family, friendship, patriotism, religion, and-to Jo's chagrin-romance. As each sister navigates their ascent into adulthood, Jo unwittingly ventures down a path of self-realization, using her gift of written prose to craft her voice, and thus, her truth. Perhaps, just maybe, she can strike balance between the freedom of independence and the warmth of partnership...

In this visionary adaptation, Little Writer tells the March sisters' timeless journey to womanhood with a multiracial cast of characters, reimagining history to include diverse communities without elaboration.

---
EXCERPT:
When spring rolls around, my sisters and I love to stay outside.

One blossoming afternoon, while I’m in the coop to feed the chickens, I spot Laurie, Beth, and Amy around the redbud tree. Laurie latches onto a branch to shake the tree loose of any lingering magenta petals. Flowers begin raining on Beth and Amy, who lock hands and spin together. Their skirts fly about them and I smile at their girlish laughter.

Once I return to feeding the animals, Laurie appears behind me. “What d’you have there?”

“Teddy! Come in. I want you to meet my chicken, Aunt Cockle-top.” I point to her and, though Laurie enters the coop, he says far from the roaming animals.

“Please keep that from me,” he says, shaking some magenta flower petals from his curls as he skirts away.

“Don’t be afraid,” I exclaim, cleaning my hands on my linen apron before scooping up Aunt Cockle-top. She flaps her wings.

Teddy stumbles backward. “Jo!”

“She’s just a chicken. Face your fears!” I haul Aunt Cockle-top into the air toward him.

He yelps and loses his footing without trying to catch her. My chicken falls on top of him and he screeches, “She bit me!” to send me into a deep laughing fit.

“Josephine!” Marmee’s scolding voice startles me. My laughter is slow to dissipate as she brings a whimpering Laurie inside.

GUEST POST:
- Which historical fiction world would you love to visit if you could and why?

This is never a simple question for people in marginalized communities, especially when their identity already has such a big impact on what the trajectory of their life looks like. We can only ever speak of it in aesthetic terms, for the abusive excuse “that’s just what it was like back then” has a much different meaning for minorities, more specifically double and triple minorities.

Part of why I wrote Little Writer is because most historical worlds I read enslave and/or abuse people who look like me. And I understand that it’s history, but I can’t appreciate the aesthetics as much as my white counterparts.

I would certainly stay within the realm of Little Writer because it’s my most secured avenue of a happy, safe life.

If I were to forgo reality entirely, I would want to visit the world of BBC’s Merlin. The accuracy isn’t there, but the vibes are immaculate! I would definitely be a witch.
