A painter with a mystical talent. An adventurer with a lifelong quest. Can they survive a brush with danger and find the love they lost in their youth?

Amelie pretends she’s content with her small business outside New Orleans. But despite her magical ability to create paintings anyone can travel through, she yearns for the love that never was. So when the boy she rescued as a child by sending him through her canvas returns as a handsome man in need of her aid, the aimless artist is startled by the flood of unexpected emotions.

Rav’s quest feels never-ending. Having escaped an abusive father through the hidden world Amelie opened for him, he’s dedicated his life to fulfilling his mother’s deathbed request. A request that has taken him across the globe, searching for an enchanted treasure. But when the object he’s seeking eludes him, he returns to the painter who saved him as a child… and discovers she’s all grown up.

Agreeing to paint the landscape to complete Rav’s epic journey breathes new life into Amelie’s world. But when the stakes are raised, Rav must answer the ultimate question: which treasure is more precious?

Sky Over Mountain and Memory is the adventure-filled first book in the Enchanted Elements fantasy romance series. If you like childhood friends to lovers, low steam slow burn romances, and dangerous mystical quests, then you’ll adore JB Lassalle’s exciting new world.

EXCERPT:
Memories of the ten-year-old Rav had long morphed into fantasies about him as an adult. Amelie wouldn’t admit it, not out loud, but while she’d pretended to give up on him years ago, her heart held a secret hope that, one day, he’d stroll into Illusion Square with his same warm smile and laughing brown eyes and say hello. When just that happened, relief, anger, and love lodged in her chest, aching in a way that was as much painful as joyful.

She held her hand to her heart, a reminder of the way they’d touched hands on the night he’d left. It was a sensation her child brain held onto, and her adult brain knew just what it meant. At ten, she’d experienced her first crush, borne out of a friendship that had only grown in intensity after the death of his mother. At thirty, there was enough of that crush present to make her pulse dance.

He wore his mother’s smile now—the adult, male version of it. Her memories of his mother were hazy, but that feeling of being wrapped inside something warm and comforting remained. When she’d died, Rav’s smile had faded for a while, then disappeared entirely. Though they had twenty years unanswered, some part of Amelie knew he still only smiled when he meant it.

He held out a glass of Ana’s refreshing peach tea, and that smile of his turned just a bit sheepish. “In the fifty steps it took me to get from there to here, I managed to forget which one is decaf.”

Because he was trying, and because the anger and betrayal was buried underneath sentiment, she fixed her own face into a welcome and took the glass from his outstretched hand. Their fingers touched, momentarily erasing the years between them and transplanting them back to a stormy night near a hidden pond where they said goodbye. She took a long sip, watching him over her glass, letting the sweet and tangy liquid soothe the block in her throat. “You look good, Rav. Real good.”

“You look stunning.” He already had her eyes, but he held them. “Your hair is a whole different color when you brush it.”

She laughed at that, choking on her drink. “Well, that was graceful.” Glad for the distraction, she took a small cloth from a nearby easel and blotted her chin.

While she did, Rav circled her gallery with the ease of one always comfortable in his skin. He touched the occasional finger to a label, picked up a few brush displays, and smiled at the circle of canvases she’d yet to cleanup from her morning class. Painted by children, they were a combination of adorable but rough flowers and the Mighty Oak, with uneven thickness to its trunk and awkward branches.

“This place suits you. It screams Amelie.”

She couldn’t explain why that nagged at her, but she huffed out a sarcastic laugh. “Let’s stop pretending we know each other, huh, Rav?” She dropped her smile. “You’ve never met the woman who created this store.”

His smile remained fixed in place, but he added a cocky bent to it. “True. But she’s wearing the necklace I sent her.”

Anger made her ears burn. “Sent in secret, though you’ve not bothered to keep mine.”

Rav waited a beat, as he deserved the dig, then took a step toward her. “That’s fair. I’d like to explain myself, if you’ll let me. Is there somewhere more private we can talk?”

There was hesitation, but she pushed it down. “We can talk here.” Gesturing to one chair, then taking the other, she licked full pink lips and crossed her feet at the ankles. “Tell me everything, starting from the moment you went through my painting.”

    1. Research! I'm a huge data nerd. If I come across an obstacle, I know I'm not alone and I find out how others overcame the same thing. I also talk things out with my support group - I'm lucky enough to have a community of authors I can run through things with.
