A bargain struck

Told her baby died in childbirth, Fancy Dalton grieves for her son. But in the midst of a raging storm, a shadowy figure appears and tells her that he’s alive and well! He was stolen! Now she has an address and a name. From despair comes hope.

One thought drives her—finding and getting him back. Selling everything she owns, Fancy buys a one-way train ticket to Denver. Nothing and no one will stop her. In a mad dash to board the train, she collides with Jack Coltrain. As fate would have it, the rugged cowboy, on a mission of his own, sits next to her. Experience has taught her to be wary of men. But when her bag is stolen, he gets it back and earns a small piece of her trust.

As the iron wheels roll, taking her closer to her two-year-old son, Fancy and Jack discover an orphan girl who needs their help and open their arms to her. Ten hours from their goal, Fancy and Jack strike a deal—her help for his. Desperate times for both call for creative solutions…but marriage, even in name only? However, nothing is off the table. She’ll do whatever she must to save the orphan and get her child back. Still, giving Jack her heart…that’s not part of the bargain.

Fancy Dalton Interviews Piper
From FANCY by Linda Broday

Hi, I’m Fancy Dalton and I’m searching for my stolen baby. Imagine my surprise when I discover a young girl in the baggage car of the train sitting next to a rough-hewn coffin. She tells me she’s bound for Denver to bury her mother. The child appears to be hungry, and I assume she hadn’t eaten in a while, so I take her under my wing. She needs someone and so do I.

FD: “Piper, why go all the way to Denver to bury your mother? Why not the town where you lived?”

PIPER: “Mama always loved the mountains and she once said that’s where she wanted to be buried. Denver is also where my grandparents live, and even if they can’t love me, I hope they help give Mama a proper burial.” Her chin quivers.

FD: “It’s good that you have grandparents. Are you going to live with them?”

PIPER shrugs: “I dunno. Mama had a falling out with them, so they don’t want me.”

FD: “And if they don’t? What will you do, child?”

PIPER: “I’ll figure out something. Mama said they’re mean and spiteful.”

FD: “Really? Why would she say that?”

PIPER: “Grandfather kicked her out and said not to come back. So, she didn’t.”

FD: “Do you have other kin to take you in? Your father perhaps?”

PIPER: “Don’t have a father and Mama was an only child. I got no one, but that’s okay. I’ll make it on my own. I’ve been taking care of Mama and cooking and cleaning, and I reckon I’ll be able to find what I need.”

FD: Tears fill my eyes. The girl was trying hard not to be scared but fear of the unknown was written on her sad face. I put my arms around her and draw her close. “Honey, don’t you worry. I’m going to make sure you’re taken care of by people who love you.”

PIPER: “But what if no one wants me?”

FD: Her plaintive whisper breaks my heart. “I want you.” I push her hair back. “Honey, you’ll stay with me as long as you need a home.”

PIPER: “And Jack too? Can I be your little girl?”

FD: “Yes, Jack too. We are a family.”

PIPER: “Thank you for your kindness, Miss Fancy.”
I'm a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of thirty historical western romance novels and short stories. I reside in the Texas Panhandle on land the American Indian and early cowboys once roamed, and at times if the breeze is just right, I can hear their voices whispering in the wind. Texas’s rich history is one reason I set all my stories here where cowboys still remain caretakers of the land. I’m inspired every day by their immense dedication and love for the wide-open spaces. I combine those men with the love of family in all my stories and hope to continue to give readers books that entertain and fulfill.

  1. Sounds like another great book by one of my favorite authors.

    1. Thank you, Rita Wray. I always love seeing your name pop up. We've been friends for a long while. I'm really grateful that you love my books and the stories I have to tell. Wishing you a wonderful and blessed day.

  2. Heather, thank you so much for having me and helping spread the word about my new book. Fancy, Jack, and Piper stole my heart. Each had a special story to tell. When I first began to think about a plot, I kept seeing a little girl sitting on a coffin in the baggage car of a train. Of course, I wondered what her story was and she proceeded to tell me. Then Fancy became a real person with a big problem and needed my help in finding her baby. Jack was the last to show up and he really took my breath. He's quite the charmer but with a toughness that comes from living in rough times. I loved them all and I hope readers will too. Thank you again for your support.

    1. You are very welcome! I love having you =) Thanks for stopping by my blog <3

I loved the character interview. So emotional <3

  3. I loved the way Jack and Fancy are bound together by Piper's great need for someone to care. It adds so much to the story. I enjoyed this interview!

  4. The character interview is interesting.
