EXCERPT:
Gia burst out the doors of the Eye, shouting back at the guards. “Take Yiannis somewhere and keep him alive until I come back!”
She whipped through the flooded casino floor with great haste, her tail flapping wildly behind her. At the casino’s exit, she was met by another set of Shadow’s men. The water was already shoulder-high, and the men had to tread water to stay in place.
She blew past them and yelled, “Try to follow me, if you can!” She rounded a corner into a smaller canal against a strong current.
The guards did their best to keep up, but they could not match her strength.
A short wall of water crashed over a bridge, washing it out. Debris hit one man, and he floated away. Gia zipped through Venice, taking every underwater shortcut to reach her palazzo as quickly as possible. She looked over her shoulder to see if Shadow’s man was still following her, but he was long gone.
Citizens and tourists trapped in their houses and hotels screamed for help from the windows. Everyone was wholly unprepared for this strange, sudden flood. The police and coast guard weren’t any help, either. Boats could not navigate the angry waters flowing through the canals.
As the water covered everything in sight, furniture, people, artwork, and centuries-old structures tumbled away in the current. Gia had never seen anything like this. Was Queen Karen really capable of all of this destruction on her own?
Gia said a silent prayer, immensely grateful that Vittore was safe in faraway Greece and not drowning in his barber shop down the street. Then her thoughts turned to Serena.
I have to get to my baby. I should have kept her with me. Why did I have to confront Yiannis? How stupid of me. I should have listened to Shadow and Florent.
As she turned to the left and approached her street, she darted to the surface. A row of merfolk soldiers were at her front door. They banged on it, but Shadow had reinforced it, and it wouldn’t budge.
Suddenly, there were loud pops in the air, like fireworks exploding. A bullet knocked one soldier down. Then another. Blood spilled into the water.
All the time, the water was rising.
The soldiers split away, retreating until the water rose enough for them to swim over Gia’s walls and into the courtyard of her palazzo.
When they were out of eyesight, she dove to the bottom of the canal and moved with careful strokes until she reached the secret hatch in her pool. She entered the code into the new security system Shadow had installed, and the door rolled open. She swam inside, into the bottom of her pool, and quickly closed the hatch door behind her.
She shot up to the surface. Water had flooded everything, but Shadow’s men had strapped on their scuba equipment. They were armed with harpoons and ready to fight.
“Where is Shadow?!” she howled. “Where is my baby?!”
