When Leah Miller's entire Amish family was murdered ten years ago, the person believed responsible took his own life. Since then, Leah left the Amish and joined the police force. Now, after another Amish woman is found murdered with the same MO, it becomes clear that the wrong man may have been blamed for her family's deaths.

As Leah and the new police chief, Dalton Cooper, work long hours struggling to fit the pieces together in order to catch the killer, they can't help but grow closer. When secrets from both of their pasts begin to surface, an unexpected connection between them is revealed. But this is only the beginning. Could it be that the former police chief framed an innocent man to keep the biggest secret of all buried? And what will it mean for Leah--and Dalton--when the full truth comes to light?

USA Today bestselling author Mary Alford keeps you guessing as two determined souls plumb the dark depths of the past in order to forge a brighter future--together.

This scene takes place in the alley behind the police station. It’s very early in the morning and Leah and Dalton have just returned from being on a stake out at Eva Hostetler’s house. Leah and Dalton step outside for some air and they are attacked. Dalton is knocked unconscious and the killer grabs Leah.

The scene ended up on the cutting room floor to streamline the number of attacks on Leah.

Leah reached for her flashlight. Before she unclasped it, she was grabbed from behind. That laugh. His laugh.

She fought like a wild animal to free herself, but his grip tightened, trapping her arms at her sides. Leah couldn’t move the weapon into position to shoot.

A knife shoved against her throat. Her call for help died away.

“Hello, Leah.” The unwelcome voice from the past whispered against her ear. “Pity about him, but he’s not for you.” The knife dug into her throat. A trickle of blood dripped from the wound. She wouldn’t show fear. She had to think of Dalton.

“He’s my boss. . ., John.”

He laughed gleefully, enjoying the game. “So, you figured it out. I’m glad. I knew you would. I wanted you to.” His hot breath fanned across her cheek. “I won’t kill him. Not yet. It’s not his time, but someone else must die soon. Beth was only the beginning. There are more games to play. You and I have a date with destiny, and I can’t wait.”

He shoved her hard. Leah went sprawling across the heated pavement. She landed on her hands and knees beside Dalton. Somehow, she’d held onto her weapon. Flipping over on her back, she grabbed the flashlight and searched the alley for him. No John.

Leah hit the radio on her uniform. “Justine, I need help. Get Henry and Sam here in the alley right away. Send medical. Dalton and I were attacked.”
