Reith had his life in order: apprentice under his mentor, Master Chronicler Vereinen, and follow in his footsteps. Until a shadowy figure appeared in his village, burning everything to the ground, including Reith's future. Now Reith's mentor is missing and Reith is on the run from the mysterious Shadow.

Reith adventures through magical forests, ancient ruins, and the lands of prejudiced elves to find his mentor, learn the secret of his sword, and unravel the mystery of the Shadow. Will Reith discover the truth of will the Shadow continue to fall over all of Terrashonen?

EXCERPT:
“Run,” the word was almost a whisper, yet it rang out, louder than Reith could have thought possible. It beat against his ear drum as if someone had rung a bell by his ear. “Run. If you look back, we will shoot over your head. The next arrow will be right behind it, aimed true at your back. If you come back, we will kill you. I am a man of my word. If you come back, I will give you a name we can mark on your tomb.”

Reith hesitated for just a moment, but then the Gray Man screamed, “RUN!”

The word hung in the air like the smoke from the smoldering town and Reith bolted. He pushed past the archers and rushed out of town, running in a headlong sprint, running for his life.

At the town's edge, just before he reached the forest, he chanced a look back and an arrow whizzed past his head, sending a short breeze across his face. He jumped behind a tree and heard the thud of an arrow hit the other side of the trunk.

Reith fled from the horror behind him, running faster than he ever thought he was capable of running. The Gray Man yelled after him, “If you see Vereinen, tell him I’m looking for him! Run!”

GUEST POST:
- Where do you draw inspiration when you are writing?

For me, my inspiration nearly always comes from an inner curiosity about the world. Why did this happen? What makes that person tick? Why are human beings capable of such goodness and beauty as well as evil? They say the best way to learn is by teaching, or in this instance, by writing novels with characters who are across the goodness and evil spectrum and figuring out what makes each and every one of them unique. True to real life, the best villains have a streak of goodness in them that makes you root for them, even in spite of all the evil they commit. The greatest heroes have a dark side to them that gives a weight to each and every choice they make, so we are not completely sure they will continue to walk the path of goodness.

And so, I walk through the world, curious about what I see. And then I want to share what I have learned. I want to write fiction that has the air of authenticity to it. I write fantasy that feels real.

Take Shadow and Sword for instance. I had the idea for the book in early 2017 and wrote the first draft between June and October of that year. In 2017, Donald Trump became president of the U.S. and if you recall, the main topic of political discussion around our nation at that time was refugees and immigration. As I meditated on all of this, the seed of an idea came into my mind. What if a human teenage boy living in a fantasy world was forced to flee from his home due to violence, and live for a time among a foreign people as a refugee? What might he experience? How might he be received?

As the idea marinated in my head, other aspects of the world began to take shape and the story of Reith as found in The Chronicles of Terrasohnen began to take form. And it all came about because I had my eyes and ears open to what was happening in my world.
