Around me, people sit entranced, listening to Nate’s skilled fingers playing Old Dominion’s “One Man Band.” I turn and meet his eyes, and of course he’s staring right at me, singing a song that speaks to my soul. For a moment, I let myself remember the way those lips tasted, the way they sang to me, and the way they made me feel. Against my skin, between my legs, and in my heart.

I honestly don’t know if another man will ever be able to touch the places he’s branded. Will anyone be able to reach my depths? Would anyone even try? It would be a daunting task to take on, trying to erase the touch of someone who lived within your being. Someone who so deeply intertwined themselves into you that they likely changed your genetic makeup.

Nate shakes his head as if he’s answering my question. No, no one could come close to us. No one gets those parts of you, Amelia—only me. The sooner you realize that, the sooner we can be happy again.

I hold up the shots, and he motions over to me with his head as he finishes his song. Sliding the guitar off his lap, he leans it against the barstool he’s sitting on and looks up at me. “Tequila?”

“Chocolate cake,” I reply.

He grins. “Ah, my girl’s favorite.”

“Do you mean Cynthia?”

Nate’s face falls, and he gives me a blank stare. “Seriously? She’s like twelve.” I turn to look back at the two women at the bar who are watching Nate and me with unabashed interest. “Wanna give them a show?” he says in a low sexy whisper before wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me close to him. His fingers dig into the flesh on my hip, and I can practically feel his possessiveness. “You seem to be giving lots of them tonight.” He raises his brow and dares me to deny that what happened between Shawn and me only moments before was anything other than a show.

I shrug, pretending that his arms around me do nothing for me. That his breath mingled with my own doesn’t make me want to inhale him. That his lips, which are practically a mask against my own, don’t make me want to nip out and bite down. “Believe what you want, Pearson. I’m just here to deliver your drink.”

He lets go of my waist and holds out his hand to take it, unaffected by my words. We clink our glasses together and down the shots, the whole time our eyes remaining fixed on one another. “So, you’re working for Sam?”

A lazy smile spills across Nate’s face. “You checking up on me, Cookie?”

He’s impossible. I roll my eyes and wait for him to respond to my actual question.

Nate huffs out a laugh and pierces my heart with his smile again. “Started last week. My last gig as a florist wasn’t working. I wasn’t able to focus in the hostile work conditions.”

“Hostile work conditions!” I practically shout.

Nate remains unaffected. “Yeah, one of the bosses kept staring at me. Made me feel uncomfortable.”

“As if,” I quip.

“You seem to be doing a lot of staring lately, sweetheart. You know you can touch if you want. I won’t stop you.”

“Can you be serious for one freaking second? Just answer my question. Why are you working for Sam?”

“Have dinner with me?”

“What?” I practically choke on my own saliva. Why would he think that after this infuriating conversation I would want to spend any time with him?

“If you want to know about my life, have dinner with me.” He says the words slowly, emphasizing each one.

“I have a boyfriend.”

Nate shakes his head. “You are making this so much harder than it has to be, Ames.”

And there it is. Exactly what I knew he was saying before with his eyes. Give in, Ames. We both know how this will end. Why delay the inevitable?

Because I’m not ready. Because I don’t forgive you. Because I don’t want to get hurt again.

“Have a good night, Nate.”
