EXCERPT:
The large, blue gem on the top of the scepter started to glow. It transformed from a light blue like the sky to a golden yellow. A beam of the golden yellow light leaped off the surface of the gem and shot straight into the clay pot. The previously dull mixture took on the color of the sun as its light shone from the ceramic container.

“Aten’s rays,” Anastasia said to herself in a mixture of both understanding and wonder. It’s like something from Harry Potter. It’s magic.

“Yes, child. Aten’s rays,” Akhenaten said with a smile.

Akhenaten parted the dead man’s lips and slowly poured the glowing liquid into his mouth. “By Aten’s will, I command you to return to the land of the living to answer my questions.”

Nothing happened at first. Then the dead man’s skin started to change, turning brighter and brighter until it glowed. It was as if sunshine were leaking out through his pores. The man’s eyelids opened to reveal two luminous, white eyes without pupils or irises. Salah grabbed Anastasia’s arm in fright, and she couldn’t help but gasp.

Then the dead man opened his mouth and spoke. “I am here as commanded, Pharaoh.” It was the same voice as when he was alive but empty and devoid of emotion. It was chilling.

The orange light bathed the snow-covered fields as the fiery globe began to dip below the horizon. It was strange that something so beautiful could signal the arrival of something so evil. One thing twelve-year-old twins Anastasia and Edward Upston knew for sure was that when mortals were caught between two bickering gods nothing good would come of it. Surviving the Viking Age may be the hardest thing they ever do, if they can…

CHARACTER INTERVIEW:
Interviewer: Welcome to another episode of Middle Grade Weekly. Today we are joined by twelve-year-old twins Anastasia and Edward Upston from The Order of Time series. Welcome to the program Anastasia and Edward.

Edward: Why does it have to be Anastasia and Edward Upston? Why can’t it be Edward and Anastasia Upston? Is this just because she was born two minutes before me?

Anastasia: Stop being ridiculous Edward. It’s Anastasia and Edward Upston because A comes before E. It’s alphabetical. (Whispering – He get’s sensitive about being younger.)

Interviewer: Alright then, why don’t you tell us about yourselves. What are the things you like?

Anastasia: I love math and science. There’s a logic and structure to it which is fantastic! I also love sports. I do MMA which is mixed martial arts like boxing, karate, jujitsu, and wrestling. It takes discipline and commitment which is what I am all about. Plus, it helps me to protect Edward.

Interviewer: Thanks Anastasia. Umm… where did Edward go?

Edward: Sorry, I’m right here. I just fell over for a second but I didn’t hurt myself this time. I love history and mythology. That may sound nerdy to some people but I can tell you it comes in handy. I also like to paint and draw. I even painted a picture of Nefertiti – the Queen of Egypt. Oh, and my friends and I have a Star Wars club as well. It’s cool. (Anastasia rolls her eyes)

Interviewer: Can you tell our audience a little bit about your adventures?

Anastasia: Sure. We have a friend called Dr. G. He’s the curator of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. where we live. At any rate, he’s part of a secret society called the Order of Time.

Edward: Anastasia we aren’t allowed to tell anyone about the Order! (Edward slaps his forehead)

Anastasia: Oh, right. This part has to be off the record. The Order is dedicated to protecting the integrity of human history. That doesn’t sound like it should be a problem but Corsairs, kinda like the pirates of time, make it difficult. They like to try to change history for their own benefit in the future. It’s up to the Order to stop them.

Edward: Yeah, except when it becomes up to us. Sometimes we have to be the ones to navigate ancient civilisations, angry gods and mythical monsters to stop the Corsairs. To keep the ripples from changes in the past from changing our present. It’s pretty heavy!

Interviewer: So it’s up to you two kids to save the world?

Edward: Pretty much. We’re a good team though, our differences actually make us stronger.

Anastasia: I don’t say this too often but he’s right. Between Edward’s nerd knowledge and my problem solving, were practically unstoppable.

Interviewer: So there you have it, Anastasia and Edward Upston from The Order of Time series. The Order of Time is available from Amazon and all fine bookshops. The sequel, The Order of Time and Odin’s Door, will be released on January 20, 2022.
