Fifteen years ago, Shelby Pearce confessed to murdering her brother-in-law and was sent to prison. Now she’s out on parole and looking for a fresh start in the small town of Valleysburg, Texas. But starting over won’t be easy for an ex-con.
FBI Special Agent Denton McClure was a rookie fresh out of Quantico when he was first assigned the Pearce case. He’s always believed Shelby embezzled five hundred thousand dollars from her brother-in-law’s account. So he’s going undercover to befriend Shelby, track down the missing money, and finally crack this case.
But as Denton gets closer to Shelby, he begins to have a trace of doubt about her guilt. Someone has Shelby in their crosshairs. It’s up to Denton to stop them before they silence Shelby—and the truth—forever.

What Does Family Mean to You?
by DiAnn Mills
The term family is an endearing quality we place on those we love. We do more than have affection for them but value, trust, and respect for who they are. The blood ties are often heart ties, and we don’t have to be related to call each other family. We long to be with these people and spend quality time with them. The sense of belonging fills us with peace, an often-rare experience in today’s busy world when others fail to support or encouragement us.
Most of us consider the definition of family as children and parents or adults related by blood or marriage. Ancestry is another important aspect of the meaning. Yet other definitions show us how the word expands to unite people, young and old, such as faith, beliefs, culture, and friendships. The idea of size, gender, race, and opinions has nothing to do with how we view family; those things don’t matter. We accept our likes and differences in a social atmosphere.
Our family isn’t necessarily limited to just the human species. Especially in the case of pets, animals and birds can fill the void of either a childless home or a home with lots of children. Single people and the elderly both cherish their pets. Distinct personalities bind the owner and the animal into a type of family.
We’ve heard the cliché: “If I could only pick my family like I pick my friends.” The statement bothers me because we’ve been given our family for a reason . . . to help each other through our strengths and show them the art of caring with no thought of reward.
The key to unlocking the door of one’s family is unconditional love. This means we can make mistakes, ask forgiveness, and the relationship continues to grow. Sometimes relationships grow stronger when we walk through a challenge together. The true family who experiences life together rejects the idea of conditional affection—I’ll love you if you do this for me.
Boundaries play an important part in keeping us mentally balanced. Relationships can be tricky, even complicated, and each member is blessed or not-so-blessed with traits that may need to be kept in check.
When we’re stressed or lonely, family memories soothe us, allowing special moments to surface like a treasure chest. Sometimes when we open the chest, a forgotten event brings back more reasons why we cherish this person or people. We long for the relationship to continue and never end.
