With remarkable skills and a shocking genetic code the Core and its enemies will do anything to obtain, Willow suddenly finds the freedom she craves slipping through her fingers. Greed, corruption, and genetic tampering threaten every aspect of her existence as she’s thrust, unwilling, into the sophisticated culture of the elite Core city. To ensure peace, she must leave the past behind, marry a man she’s never met, and submit to the authority of a relentless officer with a hidden agenda of his own.

Her life has become a dangerous game. How much will she sacrifice in order to win?

Hart had managed to bring down two riders himself and was battling another with his blade. The Ritters had each found a rebel to attack, and the two Reece had sent off were closing in from behind. Despite his seared shoulder, Aspen continued to pick off any attacker he could locate in the teeming mass of panicked horses and riders tumbling against one another.

“I can’t believe this,” I murmured as the rebel group dwindled to nothing. “It’s a slaughter.”

“No, it’s a commander with two escorts,” Kane said. “Did you count the rebels, lass? Nineteen total. Reece and his pets could have handled that alone. Add the escorts, and you can hardly call it a fight. Whoever sent this group wasn’t thinking straight.”

He kept talking, but I wasn’t listening. The man engaged with Hart had crumpled to the ground. Hart left him for dead and turned away, not realizing the rebel was still moving, straining to reach the crossbow another rider had dropped. Intuition twisted hard in my gut.

Samson. The arrow. Joshua had shown me the future.

The dying rebel let loose an arrow that whistled across the campsite and pierced Reece in the back. Arching in pain, the commander fell to one knee with a cry of rage. I rocketed to my feet.

“Willow!” Kane grabbed my arm. “Sit down before you’re seen!”

The rebel fighting Reece—seemingly the last member of his group—pressed in with his blade poised high to strike. I found the strength to pull myself from Kane’s grasp. “Reece!” I shrieked, sprinting from the mouth of the cave. I heard Kane swear as he dashed after me. Keeping my eyes on the scene below, I flew down the path just in time to watch Reece raise his sword and block the rebel’s powerful blow. I wasn’t aware of the man behind me until the edge of his knife stung my throat.

“Don’t move,” he threatened. “Burke, I got her!”

Everyone froze. Aspen, already halfway up the path, stopped with his weapon aimed at my captor’s forehead. Kane ground to a halt behind me. Hart went rigid, and Reece, still on one knee, lowered his sword.

My heart pounded. What had I done? Our enemy now had the advantage. The man squeezed hard around my chest and arms. I couldn’t move or breathe. I couldn’t reach for the knife and command it to turn on its owner. The steel seemed to mock me as its cold, unforgiving edge bit into my skin.

Below us, an equally cold and unforgiving Burke stood with the tip of his sword at Reece’s throat. “Drop the blade, Commander, or she dies.”
C.L. Denault is a speculative fiction writer who loves dreaming up tales of adventure and intrigue. A former systems analyst, she gave up her nerdy code-writing skills to care for her family (including a son with special needs) and currently lives among the vast stretches of cornfields in Illinois.

Writing and working out are her biggest passions, along with coffee and sci-fi. When she’s not hanging out with her husband and kids, she can usually be found at a library or tucked away in the shadowy corner of a hip coffeehouse. She’s also been glimpsed sneaking into her garage, late at night, to work on her time machine.

She enjoys connecting with people—especially those from other planets, nearby dimensions, and the future. To find her, just visit her website or social media pages. Or use a Stargate. Whichever is easiest.
