Geoffrey was writhing on the other side of the car, clutching his leg. Glancing up at him occasionally, I could see how much pain he was in. I hated that he had once again taken a bullet in the line of service to me. But my heart was with her and her only. When the car finally came to a stop, I flung the door open, scooping her up in my arms. I ran inside with her, grateful when I saw the doctor come into view.

Finn was there too, and when he saw Olivia, all the color drained from his face. He looked on as I carried her into the room and laid her on the bed. I could see the tears welling in his eyes, but being the tough guy he was, he wouldn’t let them escape. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there, Ethan. I should’ve been there,” he said with a weary tone. His guilt was eating him alive, but I didn’t have time to reassure him.
