Interview with Ava, Labrador Retriever & Avalanche Rescue Dog

The dogs in the A Dog’s Day series can’t speak in words to humans. However, if they could, and a reporter interviewed Ava, the Labrador of I Am Ava, Seeker in the Snow, I imagine this is how it might go . . .

- I understand you work at a ski resort in Utah. What is your job title?
The humans on the ski patrol say I am an avalanche rescue dog, or “avy dog,” for short. I’m teamed up with Nate, a human ski-patrol member. I can use my nose to sniff out and find people buried in snow–up to several feet deep.

- Do you have an office?
Well, I hang out in Ski Patrol Shack 1 with Nate until I’m needed. It’s at the top of the slope, so I have to ride the chairlift all the way up to get there each morning.

- You know, most dogs don’t get to ride a chairlift to work. What’s that like?
When I was younger, that swinging metal thing made me nervous! What in the world is that? I thought. But once my human partner, Nate, helped me to stay calm, I got used to it. I’ve heard some humans say that riding a chairlift feels a bit like flying–and I guess that’s about right!

- I saw that there are T-shirts with pictures of the avy dogs in the ski resort’s gift shop. Is that really you in those pictures?
Yep. We had a photo shoot and everything. Pretty cool, huh?

- Does that mean you’re famous?
I heard Nate call me a “ski resort celebrity,” whatever that is.

- Do you like being a ski resort celebrity?
If that means lots of nice people at the ski resort want to come by to meet me, then it’s okay with me!

- And finally, have you ever saved anyone who had been caught in a real avalanche?
Not yet, but when that day comes, I’m trained and ready!

  2. Thank you so much for inviting Ava, the star of I AM AVA, SEEKER IN THE SNOW, to share her thoughts with the world. I sure do admire these avy dogs and their ski patrol human partners, and the work they do to keep people safe. Much appreciation to you for allowing Ava to tell a bit of her story here!
