EXCERPT:
Daylight streamed through the window. Billie rolled to her side to see Jesse’s side of the bed empty. She rubbed her eyes and stretched. A headache brewed just at the edges. She balled her fists. “No. Not again.”
She willed her mind to stop throbbing. It actually kind of helped. She walked downstairs and into the kitchen. She had hoped Jesse would be there, but he didn’t seem to be anywhere. She shrugged. She was determined to have a better day. Things didn’t feel like they used to anymore, and she would force it if she had to. Mind over matter, Billie. Mind over matter.
She walked to the French doors leading to the backyard. She peered through the door to survey the yard. The large maple trees that provided shade in the summer were losing their leaves. It was time to rake them. She rolled up her sleeves and got to work.
She heard a whistle and stopped.
“Mm-hmm, you look sexy out here, babe.”
Billie wiped the sweat from her brow. “If you mean a sweaty mess, then sure.”
Jesse chuckled. “Never.” He walked to her and forced the rake from her hand. He grabbed both hands and danced her around the piles of leaves.
She relaxed into his arms and smiled.
They stopped, and he twirled her. At the last spin, they launched into the largest pile of leaves, laughed and stared skyward.
Billie raised Jesse’s hand to her lips and gently kissed him. “Thanks. I needed that.”
He smiled. “Me too.” He tucked a stray hair behind her ear. “I meant what I said earlier. You look beautiful.”
She smiled. “Well, thanks. Wanna help?”
“I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” Jesse jumped to his feet then outstretched his hand to help Billie up. He grabbed the rake from the ground and raked the leaves they had dispersed in their fun.
Billie grabbed garbage bags and loaded the leaves, leaving a nice and tidy yard.
