~
DC bustles, the light from the city fills the night. But in the dark alleys and backstreets, only slivers of light from a full moon dance. In such an alley, a shadowy figure is hunched over a body. She lifts her head to reveal soulless eyes and fangs dripping with blood as she licks her lips with exultation.

Standing up, she wipes her chin, and tosses her long black hair, then saunters away.

At FBI headquarters, Gerry examines the case files of 18 wealthy men, dead, with few clues, no DNA, and no leads...

When predator and prey become one, no one is safe.

EXCERPT:
Erin placed Mary back in the crib. A sigh escaped her lips, and her arms hung limply at her sides. Erin felt her chest tighten. What could she do to change things? She was a vampire. There was no going back.

She was a killer. No matter how much she wanted to be a mother, she was nothing more than a vengeful killer, and she needed to remember that before she hurt someone.

Gerry touched her elbow then led the way downstairs.

“She was so comfortable with you. You must love children.”

“She’s beautiful. You’ve no idea how lucky you are. I would give my life to have a child.” Erin’s voice broke as she tried to speak.

Shocked, Gerry stopped and turned. “You’re young enough, nothing is stopping you.”

“Just this condition I have.” Now it was Erin’s turn to be sad. She fought back the tears.

“I need to go.” She needed to leave before tears ran down her cheeks. Her whole body ached for the chance to have a child, and she was denied that for eternity.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
I love a good paranormal read, something about the un-dead haunts the fringes of my mind. Mix in romance, love, loss, and you have a great story.

I voraciously read everything, fiction, and non-fiction but always find myself turning back to the darker stories. I’ve always wanted to write and the dream became a reality with Capital Thirst, and the remainder of the Erin Kingsly novels.

I spend most of my days designing and building websites, but my free time is devoted to my wife, family, and cats. Yes three grown children and three cats. Things can be hectic.

For fun you might find me driving winding roads with the top down or out photographing nature.

GUEST POST:
If you could be any kind of paranormal creature, what would you be and why?
There are so many paranormal creatures to choose from, vampires, werewolves or shifters of any kind, even witches would fall into this group and let’s not forget fairies. If I had to pick though it would be a vampire. I kind of think of them as the lion of the paranormal creatures.

Sure, a werewolf can change shape or a dragon shifter can turn into a powerful, deadly dragon, but when it comes down to it, they are just mortals with a unique ability. I don’t mean to upset the shifter lovers out there they are cool, but let’s be serious about this. A vampire is stronger than a mortal, they are faster than a mortal; they have the power of suggestion, they can read minds but coolest of all, they’re immortal.

These are creatures that can live hundreds or thousands of years experiencing all that various societies and time periods have to offer. The wealth of knowledge and experience they can amass over that time is amazing.

Although I said they are immortal, there are limits. In my world vampires can’t expose themselves to the sun or they’ll die. They could be burned, and I kept the old tradition of staking alive just because I liked it. But given they escape all these misfortunes they will live forever.

Imagine having become a vampire in the 15th century and being alive today. The changes in the world that you would have experienced. Things that would have been magic or impossible have become everyday actions. The chance to view all the information available on the internet to learn anything you want. What a mind-blowing opportunity.

The big drawback to being a vampire though is the blood thing. I have a hard time imagining drinking blood and to have to do it to stay alive seems more than I could bare. Let’s be honest I can barley give blood without passing out.

Vampires have been given a bad reputation as thoughtless killers. I think most of this comes from Stoker’s portrayal of Lucy Wetenra in Dracula. This part of the story always seemed odd to me. She became a bloodthirsty monster killing small children because she was turned into a vampire. But Count Dracula was a refined count. He killed when he needed or wanted but was far from a blood crazed monster. He may have toyed with his victims but that only shows a high level of intelligence. Not a blood lust. So why this dichotomy even within the same work. Either the vampire is a monster or not.

From my perspective, if you live that long you would have such an amazing opportunity to live and experience things. You could contemplate philosophy, have read John Locke as a contemporary. There must be more to a vampire than death.

If I wasn’t a vampire, though I think I’d have to be a witch. In my case I suppose a warlock. Imagine cleaning your house without even having to get up. Or turning your mortal enemy into a frog just for spite. Besides, I already have a black cat that follows me everywhere, so I’m set.

  5. Thank you for the compliment. I love the cover and only wish I could take credit for it. Fiona Jade was the artist that created it. I think she's amazing and she's already completed the artwork for my second novel Beverly Hills Torture.

I hope you will like what's inside the cover just as much. I think she did a great job of capturing the essence of the story.

  6. How do you come up with the characters names in your book?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agonize. Seriously though it depends on the nationality. Living in the US, American names I usually think up. Sometimes I'll use those sites for naming your children to come up with ideas for first names, or use the name of someone I knew in childhood. As far as sir names I usually come up with those on my own.

Several of the characters in Capital Thirst are of Russian descent. This was a problem as I don't know any Russian names so for these I relied on websites geared towards authors that generate names based on nationality. That doesn't sound very creative I suppose, but I think it works great to have a more authentic name than me just guessing at what might sound good.

When I use these sites though, I might have to generate 50 or more lists before I come up with a name that works for the character. It's not just click and pick one.

For instance Erin was original Ahryan, but beta readers hated it because they didn't know how to pronounce it. So since it was supposed to sort of sound like Erin I just changed it.

It's definitely a vampire story. There are fangs, attacks, a little blood and in between love. That's what every lonely vampire wants after 300 years. To fall in love with the one they are meant to be with, or not.

Thank you. This is just a bit of a teaser I suppose, but if you want to read more you can download a preview on Amazon. I actually don't know how many chapters are included, but it would give you a feel for the rest of the story.

There is no doubt it's a little different than the average paranormal romance, the vampire is a woman, not the usually dark brooding male, but I think it's a fun take on the genre that a lot of people will enjoy.

    1. Nancy,

Tough question because I read everything I could get my hands on from the time I was able to read. I went through science fiction, fantasy, naval histories, classic literature. I read and read, every week I came home from the library with a huge stack of books.

If we are talking more all time favorites then certainly Arthur Conan Doyle is at the top of my list along with Agatha Christie. As far as vampires literature, Bram Stoker lit my fire for vampires, but it was Anne Rice that showed me what kind of creatures they can be.

I still read voraciously, three or four books a week. But primarily something light and enjoyable and almost always in the paranormal genre. Witches, ghosts, vampires, shifters or fae.

I know I didn't exactly answer what you asked but I hope this works.

    1. There are lots of things, it's relaxing, it allows me to be creative. I think though my favorite thing is getting lost in the story and characters as I create them.

Even though I plot the books before writing its always exciting to see where I end up at. Things never go as planned and the characters make things happen I didn't expect. So it's always a voyage of discovery.

There have been many. I don't watch much, well any TV, but I'm a YouTube addict. I'm also a cat person. So I forget the name of the video or I would include the link, but this guy set up night vision cameras in his house and recorded the cats after he went to bed.

It was a hoot, the stalked each other and one scared the other and he literally ran up the wall and came tumbling back down. No cats were hurt in the recording of that video.
