I exhale a sigh of relief. I’ve been holding my breath, but oh, my God, we have to get out of here before someone comes and sees what Mother has done. Someone may have heard the shots. We’ll leave, and the rain will cover our tracks, but we have to hurry. I lay my gun on the table and step down from the RV to help.

Mother faces me, and she’s terrifying. She’s all sharp angles and shadows and smeared mascara. I expect a thunderbolt and lightning and a bloodcurdling scream, but there’s nothing but hammering rain. My mother is soaked, her skirt clinging to her slender legs, her white bra showing through her blouse, translucent with rain. Her wet hair looks black in the gloom. Loose tendrils hang from her previously tidy bun. If she’s concerned about having killed a man, she doesn’t show it. It makes me wonder if there’s something in her past I don’t know about.

I turn back inside to see Maya holding Jace. She’s rocking him as they weep quietly.

“Maya, come help with Dad. Hurry.” Jace lunges for Maya when she gets up, but she’s too quick for him to reach her. He continues to sob, his shoulders jerking. I doubt if he even knows what happened. I despise his weakness.

Maya’s still crying as we run toward Dad, and I want to cry, too, but I need to be strong for her if I can. We fight against the wind that pushes us toward Dad’s attacker. I don’t want to see him, but my eyes are fascinated by this abomination.

The man’s remaining eye, wide open and all black, stares at us as raindrops fall in the pool of blood collecting around what’s left of his head. I imagine evil spirits, their voices howling on the wind, are pulling us toward the man’s reach, and I panic, tugging too hard at Maya’s arm, but it breaks the spell, and we run to Dad.
Colleen Eccles Penor wrote and illustrated her first children’s book, The Rubber Ducky, when she was seven, and sold it for 25 cents, keeping 100% of her royalties. She's a United States Army veteran who served as a military police officer, where she learned survival skills and the use of multiple weapons, skills needed by the characters in DAEIOS: 140 FEET DOWN. This is her debut novel.

Most people my age have experienced at least one “it’s a small world” encounter. My most memorable such experience happened while I was in the military.

I was hanging out in a pub with some people from my platoon and wasn’t enjoying myself in the least. Too much cop-talk. While people-watching, one of my favorite pastimes, I saw a group of men my age who were obviously having fun as they were laughing loudly and high-fiving. I went up to them and asked them what they were doing (celebrating a birthday) and I ended up spending the rest of the evening having fun with them and developed a friendship with Wayne.

Once, Wayne came to pick me up for a night out. As I settled in and fastened my seatbelt, Wayne asked, “Okay, so you’re a military police officer and you’re from Wyoming. Do you know Bob Palmer?”

My jaw almost hit the floor. I had worked with Bob at McDonald’s before joining the army. Wayne had been stationed with Bob in Germany before coming to Maryland, and Bob had talked to Wayne about me, giving Wayne the two clues to my identity. Wayne called Bob that night as I sat beside him. When he said, “Guess who I’m with?” it was Bob’s turn to have his jaw hit the floor.

Book Tour and Giveaway: Ticking Off Breast Cancer by Sara Liyanage

Title: Ticking off Breast Cancer
Author: Sara Liyanage
Publisher: Hashtag Press
Publication Date: September 26th 2019
Print Number of Pages: 272
Genre: Autobiography
~
Sara is a married, forty-something, mother of two and part-time lawyer in London. When breast cancer appears on her never-ending to-do list, Sara's life is thrown upside down...

Ticking Off Breast Cancer is a chronological narrative of Sara’s life from the day of her primary breast cancer diagnosis and throughout treatment. Sara opens up with heart-wrenching honesty, as she deals with the physical, emotional and mental challenges thrown at her by cancer. Accompanying her on the rollercoaster of cancer struggles, are plenty of light-hearted and positive moments. This is a no-holds-barred insight into the day-to-day realities of breast cancer treatment aimed at supporting the patient as well as their family and friends. Packed with helpful to-do lists, Ticking Off Breast Cancer provides thoughtful and helpful advice for every step of the way.

I was diagnosed with HER2 positive and oestrogen positive primary breast cancer on 19 October 2016, aged 42. It wasn’t part of my life plan (which at that point involved being a very busy wife, mother of two children, working part time in the corporate London rat race, general multi-tasker, juggler and spinner of many plates). But I decided to get through this detour with a positive attitude and as much dignity, grace and composure as possible.

Well, with the combination of medical appointments, scans, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy my dignity, grace and composure all flew out the window at some point. But I did retain the ability to get myself organised and make a few lists. And I love a list. I found myself spending a lot of time researching the practical stuff like what to take to hospital for surgery and chemo, how to alleviate the side effects of chemo, what to eat, how to relax, what to expect from radiotherapy and so on. Researching and making lists.

I found a wealth of excellent online information about going through breast cancer treatment. However, I found the websites completely overwhelming. I wanted to talk to someone who had been through it and who would hold my hand and tell me what to do. I wanted a website which gave me practical advice in one easily accessible place where I didn’t have to go through link after link trying to work out if the information was relevant or not, whilst trying to avoid the untrue/out-of-date/unreliable information. But I didn’t have someone to talk to and I didn’t find that website. Instead I researched around and I separated the wheat from the chaff, noted down a few to-do lists, shopping lists and action plans and put one foot in front of the other along the well-trodden cancer path.

Armed with my trusty lists I have made it through to the other side where I am now basking in the glow of hair regrowth, new eyebrows, new eyelashes, and a renewed energy.

After my treatment came to an end, it seemed a shame for my dog-eared lists to get thrown out but I certainly don’t plan on using them again. Never. I thought they might help other people like me. So here they are: I have created a website, which is what I needed when I was first diagnosed and going through my treatment.

I can’t hold your hand and tell you what to do, but I hope that my website can help make this turbulent journey a little less bumpy for you. I wish you all the best.

BOOK TRAILER:
---
Carla was born in Leicestershire in 1970, to parents Barrie and Pamela Day. She moved from place to place, not really settling anywhere for any length of time but collecting life stories along the way, which she would one day pen, on a weather-beaten log in Wales, with her dog by her side.

Q. Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
A. I became interested in writing at the age of thirty, after my son was born, although I've always been a storyteller and daydreamer. It used to get me in trouble at school. When I was a kid, I used to imagine all sorts of crazy things and sketch them and jot them down, not really knowing when I would ever use them. They came in handy when I started writing seriously. I believe I was born to be a writer.

Q. What is something unique/quirky about you?
A. I love to sit in cafes and listen to conversations and to people watch. It's great research. All kinds of people end up in my stories. Just look out for the woman with a notebook and pen and mischievous look in her eye, when you are at a coffee shop, it could be me. That sounds weird writing it down!

Q. Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!
A. I once got caught having a pee behind a bush at a music festival as a double decker bus went by full of party goers shouting…well, you can imagine.

Q. What are some of your pet peeves?
A. I hate when people in literary circles tell you to try emulate another writer to get noticed. I think my voice is unique enough. I wouldn't want to emulate anyone else. In fact, I try not to read the genre I write too much for fear of adapting a style that's not mine.

Q. Where were you born/grew up at?
A. Leicestershire, in a village with its own castle. I had a magical childhood.

Q. If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
A. Cuddling my son.

Q. Who is your hero and why?
A. My son. He's everything I dreamed he would be.

Q. What kind of world ruler would you be?
A. I'd be a terrible ruler, I'm too much of a free spirit, the world would be in chaos. I hate rules.

Q. What are you passionate about these days?
A. Animal welfare. I love animals, I'd like a farm one day with a pig and a goat and a few chickens.

Q. What do you do to unwind and relax?
A. Drink red wine, hike hills and mountains and walk the beach with my girl dog, collecting sea things. And of course, read…

Q. How to find time to write as a parent?
A. I write at odd times.

Q. Describe yourself in 5 words or less!
A. Quirky, Caring. Creative. Adventurous and loving.

Q. When did you first consider yourself a writer?
A. At the age of 9

Q. Do you have a favorite movie?
A. I have no favourites of anything. There's too much of everything theses days to pick just one. Life's full of wonder.

Q. Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?
A. When The Whistler Calls and Colours of Her Rainbow. ( Out soon…)

Q. What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?
A. I'm always on a pilgrimage. Usually on top of a mountain.

Q. As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
A. Most definitely a Peacock.

Book Blitz and Giveaway: Rest in Pieces (Barbie: The Vampire Hunter #1) by Lucinda Dark

Print Length: 370 pages

Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust. If vampires kill your entire family, vengeance is a must.

I can’t say my parents never warned me about vampires. I just never believed them. Not—that is—until six months ago when vampires broke into my home and killed my family. Thanks to all the skills my parents taught me, I managed to escape but I couldn’t save them.

Two vampires down and the rest of the world to go.

My bid for revenge is going to have to wait, though, because until I turn 18, I’m being placed in the loving care of Elizabeth and Jonathan McKnight—godparents I didn’t even know existed. The clock is ticking until I can get back to my goal of eradicating the vampire race. But something is amiss at my new high school. According to my parents, vampires can’t walk in daylight. So, why then, does Torin Priest? If he’s not a vampire, then what is he? Because unlike the obnoxious asshole, Maverick McKnight, who sees me as some sort of bloodsucking leech on his wealthy family, Torin Priest is most certainly not human.

To stake or not to stake, that is the question.

EXCERPT:
“Why are you doing this?” I asked.

“Because”—I shuddered as his tongue licked up the side of my throat—“we’re vampires and because we can, little bird.”

Because they could. The thought echoed in my skull. Because they were stronger. Because they had the power to. Because they were vampires. Because vampires did whatever they wanted. Because no one had stopped them. Someone needed to stop them.

But there’s no one else here … only me…

“This is so touching, isn’t it?” Travis let out a forced sniffle. “The family that hunts together, dies together and all that, right?”

“I’ve never hunted before,” I said. My cheeks were stiff with the drying tears, but somehow, no more fell from my eyes. It was as if I had cried myself out. There was no more weeping, no more sobbing. I’d had enough. I had none left to give.

“What’s that?” Travis bellowed a laugh. “Did you hear that, Kent? She said she’s never hunted before. That explains so much.” His hand fell away from my face. But there wasn’t much more to see. Brandon’s eyes were closed and his breaths had slowed to barely a trickle, his chest rising and falling impossibly slow. “Did they not tell you about vampires?” Travis asked.

I shook my head. “They did,” I answered. “We didn’t believe them.”

“Well…” He shoved me forward and I stumbled over my father’s body, landing on my bruised ribs. A wince escaped as the fall sent a dull imitation of pain through me. “That is a travis-ty.” He chuckled.

Kent lifted his head from Brandon’s neck and groaned. “Seriously? I’m feeding here.”

Enough. I’ve had enough. No more. I’d do anything to make it stop. To make it all stop.

My fingers brushed cool metal, and without thinking, I reacted, clasping tight around the scimitar’s handle.

Never pick up a weapon you have no intention of using. If you fight, you fight to kill.

The words were my mantra as I swung the blade up and brought it down. The blade slipped right through the center of Kent’s neck but stopped short. I could hear him spluttering, feeling the squelching around the sharp end of my sword. He reached up, trying to claw at the other end poking through his trachea. Rage filled me.

No, I thought. He doesn’t get to live. He doesn’t deserve to live.

Of all the things my parents had taught me, they had focused on the methods with which to kill a vampire the most. As a child, I’d relished in the idea of beating up make believe monsters. As a teenager, I’d grown annoyed by their adamant urgings. I channeled all of my guilt at never believing them into my current task. Bearing down, I gritted my teeth and turned the scimitar, forcing it the rest of the way through one half. His body flopped against the carpet. All of the blood he’d just drunk from Brandon spilling out onto the floor. I felt numb inside. The blood didn’t scare me—not anymore.

"A vampire tale with a heady mix of defiance and doubt, rebellion and romance." — Kirkus Reviews

"There is not a single dull moment in this book... A Violet Fire has all the ingredients to become the next Hollywood movie about vampires." — Readers' Favorite

In the Vampire Stratocracy of Cain, human blood is scarce. For centuries, councils have sought to assuage the blood shortage by enslaving and breeding humans, turning them into profitable supply units for the rich and the abled.

Today, eighteen-year-old Wavorly Sterling is officially a supply unit, bound to serve her blood willingly to her master for the rest of her life. One of only few humans that was not bred in Cain, Wavorly knows freedom better than anyone, and she is determined to escape the clutches of her oppressors—despite the allure of forbidden love.

EXCERPT:
He grabs the hair on the back of my neck and pulls down, exposing the breadth. My mind leaps to my years of night terrors; to that vampire from ten years ago; to my mother changing before my eyes into one of the fallen. I nearly forget to breathe while terror floods my veins.

He’s going to turn me into one of them!

“No! You can’t!” I scream as he lowers his face to the crook of my neck and shoulder, his hot breaths sending chills along my skin—as if each and every inch knows the horror that lies ahead.

“I can,” he says.

My fingers grasp at his immovable arms that have me locked against him. I pull and push with as much might as my hands can muster, to no avail. If I am dirt, he is steel.

GUEST POST:
If I could be any paranormal creature, I would definitely have to be a vampire… mainly because I’m promoting a vampire tale and it would feel weird to say anything else (just kidding!). I’ve actually got three legitimate reasons why I would probably be a vampire over anything else. Ready? Here goes.

Since I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the Victorian and gothic sub-culture. When Hot Topic was still a “weird” store; the blemish on the face of the two-story malls in the early 2000’s, it was my store of choice. I remember saving up to buy Tripp pants with my friends, gushing over lace chokers, and fawning over everything black and macabre. Dark fantasy, dark romance, dark anything was right up my alley which brings me to reason number two.

I thrive at night. I’m not a morning person, but more than that I prefer to sit in darkness, work in darkness, and exercise after the sun goes down (my nightly runs under the moonlight put some of my family members on edge). One of my coworkers actually calls me “the vampire” because I have dim lamps in place of the harsh, fluorescent lighting of the office. I never turn on those lights, they are just too bright!

The final reason why I would be a vampire is because, well… by popular culture’s standards, if I become a vampire, I get assigned a level of immortal sexiness and who doesn’t want that? I suppose a werewolf or elf would also achieve this effect, but I’ve never seen an elf or wolf knock back red wine quite like me. However, I’ve seen a vampire knock back an entire human body of blood so… vampire it is!

  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • This time around was great. We secured a fantastic deal with Audible, and they looked after everything for me. In saying that, they were also very open to my ideas regarding cover art and the narrator. Great team that I can’t praise enough.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • Not at the time. All I wanted was to write the best book possible. Everything else comes later.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • I absolutely adore writing. Writing books, while painful, drives me onward every day, and nothing gives me more pleasure than creating a tale from nothing more than my imagination and a few keystrokes.
  • If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    • Probably not. No doubt, I would screw everything up and bring back the dinosaurs or something.
  • If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles?
    • Dave Bautista from Guardians of the Galaxy would play Ash. I don’t know about the others; casting’s never been my forte.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • What a load of nonsense. A story is a story, something to enjoy, not a task to perform. If scientists knew how to bottle a book and inject it straight into an artery, I’d be the first in line. The same people who say this are probably the ones who also criticize eBooks. Get into literature any way you can and ignore the naysayers.
  • How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
    • Pizza and Playstation.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • Writing slump is easy; I don’t have them. I know that makes me sound arrogant, but it’s true. How can you run out of ideas in a universe of infinite possibilities? Reading slump, though… I just grab a Harry Potter novel and dive in. Gets me every time.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • A stand-alone encompasses an entire tale into a single novel, whereas a series draws it out, making the reader extend beyond the first tale to find out the full story. This stretches the enjoyment, but if you don’t draw the reader into your tale in the first book, they’ll never read the whole series. A stand-alone, for good or ill, shows the entire picture in one hit, leaving the reader satisfied or cursing you, depending on the person.
  • What’s your favorite:
    • Food: Pizza
    • Song: Various
    • Book: Waylander by David Gemmell
    • Television show: Breaking Bad
    • Movie: Star Wars
    • Band: Justin Bieber.
    • Just kidding, let’s go with Machine Head, but it changes day to day. Tomorrow, I might say Mozart (I know, he’s not a band.)
    • Sports team: None, I’m a nerd.
    • City: New York.
  • Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work?
    • New York’s in a few of my tales. I love it to bits.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
    • Keep going forward, charge ahead, be honest to yourself, and screw the critics.
  • What’s next for you?
    • My manager is talking movie and/or television deals with various producers. I’m currently editing another fantasy-adventure, and I have a horror novel ready to edit sitting on my hard drive, waiting for me, whispering every so often. No rest for the wicked.
