What do you do when you are alone in the world? If you're a nice middle-aged lady with a social conscience, you go to your local shelter and adopt a rescue dog. Of course, sometimes it isn't only the dog who needs to be rescued. That's when life might send you a Dancer-Dog.

** All proceeds from the sale of Rescued by Miriam Newman will be donated to Home Free Animal Rescue, Red Bank, NJ. **

EXCERPT:
Ahead and to the right, a smaller track branched off, leading to a wooden footbridge over a small, deep creek. The barking seemed to be coming from there and I thought she had probably gone down for a drink. I was starting to get a little anxious about my chicken in the oven, so I called her again, but all I got was more barking. Drat, I would have to go get her. Turning onto the path, I spotted her standing on the bridge beside a dark, hairy lump. Oh, Lord, she had found something dead. I just hoped she wasn’t rolling in it. She was licking it as if thinking about it.

“Dancer!” I hollered, not anxious to have a reeking dog I’d somehow have to bathe in freezing weather. She looked up at me and that’s when I saw it wasn’t dead. Dancer, the dog who hated other dogs, was licking the face of a dog lying on the bridge. Wait...no...not ON the bridge. He was IN the bridge. Incredulous, I realized that all four of his legs had somehow gone through the slats and he was stuck there like a cork in a bottle, unable to extricate himself.

“Oh, my God.” I slid on my knees beside the barely- breathing lump of old, frozen, snow-covered dog. He had a thick coat like a shepherd mix, but even so rivulets of water and ice were running in ropey snarls down his sides. His face was snowy and it was that snow Dancer was licking off him.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Fantasy poetry driven by myths and legends has been my passion for as long as I can remember. I was published in poetry before catching the romance writing bug. I bring that background to my writing along with a lifelong addiction to horses, an 18 year career in various areas of psychiatric social services and many trips to Ireland, where I nurture my muse. My published works range from contemporary fantasy romance to fantasy historical, futuristic, science fiction and historical romance. Currently I live in rural Pennsylvania with a “motley crew” of rescue animals.

GUEST POST:
If you could be any kind of animal you wanted, what would you choose to be and why?
At one time, I would definitely have responded “horse.” I have been enthralled with horses since childhood, rode and owned many, bred and showed them, fox hunted and generally slavishly devoted my life to them.

But along the way another thing happened. Feeling quite alone in my house after my husband died, I went to the local shelter and adopted a dog. Dancer was my first—but not my last—rescue dog and the subject of the book “Rescued” about which I’m blogging with Goddess Fish Tours. The lessons in devotion and companionship I learned from that dog changed what would have been my original answer to this question. She was the proverbial rescue dog that rescued her human, and there have been many since. They astonish me with their loyalty, their understanding and their uncanny intuition. I think they know far more than we ever give them credit for. They are a gift. And so if I could be an animal, I do think now it would be DOG. As a lot of people say, “It’s God spelled backwards.”

  6. Thanks for your comments. I have now returned from my evil day job eager to see them. My model for the cover of Rescued is Tia, my own pit bull adopted from Home Free Animal Rescue. Unfortunately the photos of Dancer, the subject of my story, were not suitable for a book cover but Tia was only too willing to pose for a biscuit. Dancer was an amazing dog. I have had many others and worked with several great rescues in the Eastern U.S., as well as many transporters and people who pull from animal shelters. They are all part of a chain of love and extraordinarily devoted. If anyone has questions about rescue, please feel free to post.

    2. Thank you so much! She really is a beautiful dog and everything a pit bull should be. There are many equally fine pitties out there; I have worked with enough of them to know.

    1. I would say from about age five, which is when I learned to print and started writing "books" on my mother's shopping lists. Fortunately, she encouraged me. LOL.

    1. I think I have rescued upwards of two dozen dogs at this point. Right now I have four of my own, all rescues. But my family has always had dogs starting back with litters of puppies in my childhood. My first dog of my own was a white English Bull Terrier, Polly. Since then I've had seven more that I actually owned.
