Ever since a devastating family tragedy seventeen years ago, Grace Bighill has struggled to keep her remaining family from falling apart. Then the discovery of her mother's body in the woods unearths a connection to a decades old murder case, and Grace is dragged into a politician's bitter bid for revenge.
Constable Mike Davenport's days in Aspen Lake are numbered. He's ready to take his next step up the career ladder somewhere a lot more cosmopolitan. He's avoided any emotional attachments, despite having fallen hard for a certain stubborn local. But when a body turns up, Mike's careful intentions collapse in the face of Grace's grief and her exhaustive efforts to care for her family.
A search for answers leads Grace and Mike down a twisted path proving no one can escape their roots. But someone might die trying.

EXCERPT:
A knock on his door had Mike expecting to see his neighbor from across the hall wringing her hands over her perpetually lost cat. But the woman standing there wasn’t elderly. Or kind. And he hadn’t spoken to her more than a handful of times in the last seven years.
“Mother.”
“Michael.” She made every one of the seven letters of his name sound like a reproach. Helen Alton Davenport didn’t kiss his cheek, extend a greeting, or smile.
He swallowed, then remembered his manners. Manners were important to her. Using them made dealing with her easier. He backed up. “Please, come in.”
She wasn’t alone. There was movement at her side and too late Mike noticed Elizabeth.
She stepped into the void and offered her cheek. “Michael, how are you?”
Politeness and shock had him brushing his lips over her cool skin. It marked the first time he’d touched her since Justin’s death, her perfume was as familiar to him as rain in spring.
“Is everything okay?” he asked. Their intrusion into his everyday life was at best alarming, at worst terrifying.
His mother, cutthroat criminal lawyer, in clothes that had corporate corner office woven into the fabric, stepped into his apartment. “We have things to discuss.”
Elizabeth slipped in beside her. Her lavish curves disguised by a severe suit, and her blonde hair tamed and hidden in a sleek roll. Gone were the dangling earrings and the flowing skirts of the girl both brothers had loved. One of them in public. The other in private.
A necklace circled her throat. He’d given it to her after a particularly sordid encounter in a dirty alley behind a five star restaurant. Inside - a function attended by everyone they knew, outside - the smell of garbage and damp rain. Pigeons had cooed and things had scurried.
Afterwards, Justin had asked where they’d disappeared to.
Mike’s stomach rolled, and self-loathing clawed its way up his throat. Showing weakness in front of his mother wasn’t an option. Not at five years old and not at thirty-two.
