Book Tour and Giveaway: The Cat Who Pawed the Cultist (Sanctum Guardians Book 1) by Robert Hazelton

The Cat Who Pawed the Cultist
Sanctum Guardians Book 1
by
Robert Hazelton

Genre:
YA Urban Fantasy
Charlotte Barreau has tried to maintain a low key lifestyle but it isn’t easy for a young witch. As a student of the Holstrom Sanctum, she’s studied the intricacies of magic but never had to apply them to anything of importance. Her biggest concerns involve finding a movie she hasn’t seen, spending time with her friend Avery, and passing magical physics. All that changes when she meets a feisty orange cat attempting to foil the plot of a cultist opening a portal to another world. This magical beast comes to her with a calling, a duty to defend our world against denizens of a dangerous realm called the Umbra Oculus. Charlotte finds herself inextricably bound to her new friend, a partner in his crusade. As they begin to investigate, they find themselves dangerously outmatched. Their opponents are fully trained, adult wizards with serious zeal for their work. Even after enlisting the aid of two additional students, they discover they may not be cut out for the task. But with no one else working on the problem, these children and their cat must save the world, even as they risk their very lives in the effort.

“Be still!” I rasped. “Come on, you want to come with me, I have to sneak you in!”

“Why?” He asked. “I can smell another guardian here. I’ll introduce myself, tell him I’m moving in and we’ll be purrfect.” He waggled his little cat brows. “Did you like that there? Purrfect? Huh? Huh? C’mon, lady. It’s hard enough being a cat if you’re not going to throw me some tuna when I’m cute.”

“You’re adorable,” I replied. “But now, you have to be quiet and still! I’m going to wrap you in my jacket and bring you inside. I’ll sign in, we’ll go up the elevator and be in my room in no time.”

“Then?”

“Then we’ll talk.”

“No.”

I sighed. “What do you mean no?”

“First, we dine! Meow!” He sang the song of his people loud enough to wake the dead. I put my fingers over his mouth as soon as he finished.

“Sh!” I rasped. “I’ll give you food, yes. But there won’t be anything if we don’t get inside without being caught, get it?”

“Right. Stealth mode. I'm totally stealthy. I blend into any Latin inspired decoration. Oh! And hardwood floors! I totally melt into those. You'd never see me before I'd pounce! Haha!”

“Stop!” I wrapped him up. He still squirmed a bit but calmed down once I opened the door. Stepping over to the counter, I grabbed the pen to sign in. My hand trembled but it calmed down when I pressed the tip of the ballpoint to the page. I nearly finished writing my last name when the attendant looked at me, making me jump.

“You okay?” He asked.

“Uh huh.” I nodded, eyes wide. “Why? Do I not look okay? Is something wrong with me?”

His brows furrowed. “I’d say yes, probably.”

“Oh! Well.” I laughed nervously. “Nothing that can be helped right now. I’m just…going up to my room…for dinner…and homework.”

“Don’t let me stop you.” He tilted his head back and stared at the ceiling again.

“Bye bye!” I hurried over to the elevator and hit the button.

“You’re not smooth!” The cat said, his high voice muffled by my jacket.

“Shush!” I whispered harshly. “No more talking until we get to the room!”

“Did you say something?” The desk guy called out.

“Nope!” I yelled back. “Not to you at least. Just…talking to myself! About my homework I mentioned earlier. You know?”

“You fifth year kids are weird,” he replied. The elevator door opened and I boarded.

“I know! We totally are! Thanks!” I let the door close and slumped against the wall. “Great, now someone else thinks I’m nuts.”

“Ya kinda are nutters.” Another muffled comment from my jacket, this time in a faux British accent.

“Really? You’re cockney cat now? What’s that about?”

“Holstrom is a famous English school,” the cat said. “So I’m just tryin’ ta adapt, luv!”

“Don’t. Please don’t.”

The elevator door opened, revealing a blessedly empty hallway. Mine was the fifth door on the left and I practically ran the short distance. Bursting in, I put the cat on the floor. Only then did the earlier event catch up to me. I’d faced a total nut job and somehow survived. The trembling that plagued my hands downstairs moved to the rest of my body.

Juliet grew up in northern California, where she spent her free time staring at spooky lakes and making up stories about the old buildings surrounding them. Years later, she still lives in California and she still makes up spooky stories...about lakes and the old buildings surrounding them. Like April in April's Ghosts, she's terrified of spiders and she's obsessed with Hamilton. Like Lissa in June's Blood, she plays the piano...but not very well.

Q: What makes your writing stand out?
A: There is always an element of storytelling in my writing, because it’s such a fundamental human gift—both telling stories and hearing (or reading) them. My books feature strong female protagonists who aren’t always “strong” in the traditional sense of the word, but maintain a strength that helps them grow and change during their story. My fantasy novels contain imaginative settings and creatures that challenge my characters, and there is almost always a touch of romance within them.

Q: What other books have you published?
A: Aside from The Scorpion’s Lullaby, I’ve also published several YA Gothic mysteries set in unique, contemporary settings. The Blood Flesh Bone series is set in a haunted school during a summer classical music program. The Winter’s Cavern series features a storyteller heroine who gives tours in the cave system beneath her family’s property.

Q: What’s next for you?
A: I plan on writing more Luminous Lands novels that connect to The Scorpion’s Lullaby in some way. I really enjoy this world and the creatures and characters within it.

Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

New school. First love. A psychotic werewolf that wanted me dead. And it was only week one in Santa Isadora.

For fifteen-year-old Teavan Laurent and his older sister Suzanne, Santa Isadora seemed like a sleepy and idyllic California town to finish high school after their unexpected move west from New York City.

As he struggles to make friends in a town shrouded in secrets, Teavan soon finds himself the target of an irrational tormentor and rumored-to-be werewolf. The revenge-obsessed psycho vows to wipe out Teavan and his small family due to past wrongs beyond Teavan’s control or knowledge. The twisted legacy left to him by his late grandfather brings Teavan at odds with everything he knows to be true—or at least everything he thought to be true.

The impossible truth of the tale begins to gain traction at his first wolf sighting, and Teavan and Suzanne soon find themselves in the crosshairs of the dark and secretive lycan world of Santa Isadora.

Stalked by a legend that shouldn’t exist, Teavan must decide how far he is willing to go to save those that he loves and come to terms with what lurks from within.

EXCERPT:
Suzanne looked surprised and finally clued into the tense situation. “Teavan, who is this guy?”

I was literally shaking with anger. I watched Bruno and my sister, unsure of what to do, knowing that if I stepped in things would quickly escalate. At the same time, I wanted to crack him for even talking to my sister in that way. My clenched fists were sweating.

“Suzanne, are you okay?” said a deep voice from behind.

It was Jason Kemper.

Suzanne looked back and forth. “No, not really. This jerk just pushed me and spilled my drink.”

Now Jason’s face went red and he set his cup down. “Bruno, please tell me this isn’t true,” he said, walking up to Bruno until they were just a foot apart. Jason must have had six inches and forty pounds on him.

Bruno looked up, unwavering. “I don’t have an issue with her, just that kid.”

Jason looked over to me as Bruno pointed.

“Well,” Jason said. “That kid is Suzanne’s brother, so he’s off-limits. Now leave.”

They stared each other down, Jason breathing heavily through his nose with his mouth in a scowl.

Bruno smirked, looking up. “Or what?”

**Only .99 cents!**

Rita Kruger lives in Vereeniging, South Africa. She is wife, granddaughter, daughter, mother, and grandmother. Most of childhood happened within the pages of books. Stories conspired to carry her away from the world she knew. The places and people books introduced her to were much more exciting than her boring existence.

Currently married to her personal MacGyver, she surrounds herself with what enriches her body, mind and soul. Family. Friends. Nature. Great food. Good wine. Mountains of books. She writes novels challenging major themes of her life in the genres of fantasy and gothic horror, which she loves.

- What is something unique/quirky about you?
I love food more than thin thighs. I also stopped coloring my hair. Out there in the world people pay good money to have grey hair, and I rock it naturally! I have very small feet, but a loud voice.

- If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
Actually, I did have a doctor put a “Expiry date” sticker on me three years ago. There was no specific date. He said if I made the required lifestyle changes I could extend my life, like milk being kept in the freezer instead of outside. But it shook me in ways I wasn't prepared for at all. Time has become a highly valued commodity for me, and I hate it when people waste mine.

;)

How has this changed my life? I do the best I can to spend time with family, and to keep on writing. It has always been a dream of mine and I haven’t done anything constructive to achieve this in ages. Now I write every day.

- What do you do to unwind and relax?
I love a cold shower and a good red wine with a book. Binge watch a series. Sometimes I go for a walk.

- When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I was born to be a storyteller. Even from young I would gather people around me and spin them tall stories. I had a running serial with kids at the school, and during breaks we’d sit under a tree for the next episode.

- As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
A lizard. Sounds weird, I know. But for the last year I see three or more of them every day. In the strangest places. Especially in my dreams. I have adopted it as my spirit animal after some investigation. They are able to adapt to their environment, deal with adversity, and not only survive under such severe circumstances, but thrive. They are also able to protect themselves well by using camouflage to trick attackers. But best of all is their ability to sacrifice a part of themselves in order to get out of a deadly grip. After the escape they can regenerate what was lost.

I think the last portion is why I love the lizard so much. They understand that sometimes it is better to cut off the part that might get you killed. It has always been hard for me to walk away from things that are not good for me. I think it is that way for all of us. But the lizard shows us we can grow anew, and what was sacrificed for survival can be regained.
